Travel+Leisure: Best Chinese Restaurants in the U.S.

Taipei Gourmet, Lexington, MA

This unassuming Taiwanese restaurant has garnered a devoted following of locals both for its classic dishes (think xiao long bao dumplings, bamboo sticky rice, and hot and sour soup) and bold offerings (pig intestine casserole and turnip cakes). Since Taiwanese cuisine relies heavily on seafood, you can also expect to find dishes like shrimp with vegetables and spicy fish filets. The staff’s hospitality and attention to detail rival their made-fresh-daily food, a fact frequent patrons are all too happy to share. taipei-gourmet.com

New Arlington Consignment Store Opened By Lexington Women

Longtime Lexington residents Buzzy Marley and DiAnne Wyner have decided to turn their years of volunteering at Temple Isaiah’s annual rummage sale into a high-end consignment store in Arlington, at 25B Mass. Ave. near the Menotomy Grill in Arlington.

They chose Arlington because it is not overrun with consignment stores, and their location is on the edge of Cambridge, and not far from Tufts University. There is also plenty of parking and it’s accessible by public transportation, which is important for the special needs young adults who will be working at the store.

It is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday, and on Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Fridays and from noon to 3 p.m. on Sundays. To consign items, call 781-643-0862.

No more do-it-yourself electronics

Radio Shack no longer sells its 8″ polypropylene woofer, CAT 40-1024A. Searching the radioshack.com website yields a reference to the product manual, dated 2004.  I guess no one repairs speakers anymore?

Installing and Running a Virtual Machine (VM) within a VM

Sep.27, 2011 in Virtualization 3 Comments

Using virtualization technology has helped me reduce I.T. costs within an office and development/production website environments.  I primarily use VMware products such as Workstation, Player and ESXi Server.  I find these applications simple to install and manage and they are quite robust and stable.  Yesterday I found myself needing to install a Linux VM within an Amazon EC2 Windows Server 2008 VM by using VMware Player.  Don’t ask why, it just had to be done and not for academic entertainment.  I have never tried to install a VM within a VM before so I was initially quite surprised that Player wouldn’t allow me to power on the VM I created to install Linux.  The message it gave me was

You are running VMware Player via an incompatible hypervisor. You may not power on a virtual machine until this hypervisor is disabled.

I knew there had to be a way to get this to work, so a Google search on that message led me to a VMware Community article that discusses running a VM within a VM.  Thankfully the solution was easy to spot, even though it was at the very bottom of the article.  To get this VMware Player VM running inside an Amazon EC2 instance, all I needed to do was edit the instance.vmx file and add the following line to it:

vmx.allowNested = TRUE

Wired Mag: The Web Is Dead. Long Live the Internet.

“Two decades after its birth, the World Wide Web is in decline, as simpler, sleeker services — think apps — are less about the searching and more about the getting.”

Sell Signal on 36% Profit Increase Has Analysts in Math Denial

“Meyer Shields says earnings at Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. will increase the most since 2006 this year. He’s also telling investors to sell the shares because the economic recovery is weakening.”

“Shields says his biggest concern is that joblessness will weaken consumer spending, which accounts for 70 percent of the American economy. The unemployment rate held at 9.5 percent for a second month in July and has fallen less than a percentage point from the 26-year high of 10.1 percent last year, according to the Labor Department in Washington.”

“It’s negativity on the economy and therefore the ‘sell’ rating on Berkshire,” Shields said in an interview from Baltimore. “Employment is much worse than what people have anticipated. That uncertainty is contributing to weaker-than- desired employment and if I had to pick one single factor that underlies our negativity, that’s what it is.”
